However, even with these differences we still hold similar values and remain close friends. Ever since I can remember I have been raised in an Authoritarian household. Some styles result in a lot of progress and building relationships and others result in very little. The most effective type of conflict resolution is compromising and the least effective is forcing. But the situation would not even be a conflict if the members of my family did not have different views. That’s fine, but what isn’t is when members of my family pre-judge us and think that when they come around us they will get the you are a horrible sinner and you will go to hell speech which is something that we would not force upon them like that. That is also one of the things we went over in class was that with conflicts you disagree with the ideas and behavior, not the people.…

An authoritarian family often “rigidly adhere[s] to a particular ideology (religious, political, personal), which dominates the purpose and function of the family” and also “often ha[s] a rigid hierarchical structure and demand[s] devotion to the authority figure” (Witchel 8). There may often be a divide between the authoritarian parent and the children because of how “the authoritarian parent's tendency to assert power. . . [is] reinforced by his intolerance of ambiguity” and thus “this intolerance of ambiguity should lead the authoritarian parent to view the child's misbehavior as totally negative-to be less concerned with nuances, mitigating circumstances, and underlying causes” (Hoffman). The authoritarian parent will also expect unwavering obedience from his or her children because “the authoritarian's self-image as an adequate parent is apt to be bound up, in some degree, with the ability to command respect and unquestioned obedience from the child” (Hoffman). The coldness of the authoritarian parent, especially if it’s the father, may also transfer to the other…

My Struggle, My Purpose Initially, I was going to stop on my way home, but I passed this store conveniently on my way into work and it was an impulse decision to pull in, almost as if I didn’t have control as I put on my left blinker. “I’ll take the test when I get home”, I thought to myself while leaving the Walgreens parking lot. The elderly lady behind the counter wished me luck as she scanned the pregnancy tests across the register. Really, luck?…
