Has the Internet taken over the PC desktop as the centre of action? Why or why not? I feel the Internet has taken over the PC desktop as the centre of action, but I still feel the Personal Computer still plays a vital role. PC’s are still used by people to do everyday tasks, like write reports, email, home entertainment etc. , but over the past number of years, with the rise of smartphones and tablets the PC’s role has somewhat diminished. More and more people used their phones on the go to do everyday tasks rather than at home on their PC. The main reason for this is plain and simple, it is easier. For example, previously if someone wished to purchase something online, they would wait till they got home and bought it on their PC’s, slowly, with the seemingly overnight boom of smartphones, “For the first time, more than one-quarter of the global population will use smartphones in 2015” (eMarketer, 2014), they began using their phones to do

How did it affect its business model? Do you believe this was a good move? Previously Microsoft “grew to its giant stature on the strength of its Windows Operating System” “which is used by 500 million people worldwide” (Google Versus Microsoft: Clash of the Technology Titans) Google are now claiming that 90% of computing tasks can be done within their cloud, of course Microsoft strongly refutes these claims. (Google Versus Microsoft: Clash of the Technology Titans) Microsoft tried to acquire Yahoo! To maintain a foothold on Google’s leading market share within the search market. Currently “Google controls over 60% of the internet search market with Yahoo! A distant second at just over 20 percent, and Microsoft third at under 10%” (Google Versus Microsoft: Clash of the Technology Titans)
With Microsoft purchasing Yahoo! It would bring up their market share to about 30%, still half that of Google’s, but it would still make it an easier job of someday toppling
