The purpose of stating these values is to have my own reference that will align me to consistently make good ethical decisions as a journalist. To know what to report on and when a story would not be appropriate. There are three values to which I aspire to as my Personal Code of Ethics. I feel that Truth, Engagement and Relevance, and finally, Responsibility to Conscience will help continue to shape me personally and as a career journalist.

As a journalist, I want my stories to be engaging and relevant to my audience. I believe that it is important to get stories out in a quick manner but making sure that they are engaging too. Readers are inquisitive and I want mine them to be able to feel as if they are at the scene. I don’t want my work to fail the readers and leave thinking that I am lazy, lack skill or have cultural blinders. (p.215)
The third value that I hold dear is Journalist Have a Responsibility to Conscience. As a journalist if something does not feel like it would be a good ethical choice to do then I am going to listen to my conscience and refrain from those choices. “There are no laws of news… it ends up being sort of your own guiding compass that will determine what you do and don’t do.” (p.277)
