He was born by Englishman John Swift, the elder and Abigail Erick on November 30, 1667 in Dublin, Ireland (. His father died even before he was born and had an older sister. When he started to grow up, he began to be a member of both England’s and Irish’s cultures. And later on in his life, he became the Dean of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in his home town, Dublin. His values and sentiments were similar of those who lived during his age. However, the Romantics and Victorians reacted defiantly against Jonathan Swift. Foremost of these were DeQuincey and Thackeray, who went as far as calling Swift as obscene,, blasphemous and other rude words, especially with reference to the Gulliver’s Travels book. These putting down of Swift was fuelled by fear that he was a grave threat to the English order of society, primarily when it comes to the stability of its foothold on Ireland. Nonetheless, amidst the Victorian era, Swift had a defender in the person of John Ruskin. This person is a noted critic of the arts, architecture and government/society, a gifted painter, an excellent prose stylist who desired to effect societal change through his works. In reading Swift’s published books and pamphlets, he readily admitted his willingness to be identified with the savaged
