Personal Narrative: A Career As A Teen Parent

I have always been deeply committed to helping others, especially helping those who come from similar backgrounds such as mine. Several experiences have stimulated my attraction to the field of social work. The first step towards my passion to study social work was formed when I was 18 years old and I had my daughter Samantha. I was a single parent and I didn’t have much support from my family. Before I had my daughter I had dropped out of high school. I had some amazing caseworkers who went beyond the call of duty. They were so companionate, attentive and caring and they really helped me to better my life. With their help, I learned life skills and I went on to graduate high school. I knew then that I wanted to help other young parents to …show more content…
I think my personal perspective of being a teen parent will help me to empathize and understand what these young parents are facing. I have great communication skills and I pride myself on making others feel heard. I also have great conflict resolution skills and I feel that it is a skill that I can teach my future clients. I have always been told that I am approachable and easy to get along with. I have always enjoyed helping others to better their lives. Finally, I am very patient with people and I know this will pay off when working with teen parents.

Part 11.
In the article five trends Driving the Future of Human Services Tracy Waren writes about how human services are going to change. Social service and government agencies will work in parallel with one common goal. The mix of new people and resources will help to cut costs and have more people working towards a common goal. They are beginning to look at pay-for success contract that are paid when positive outcomes are met. This will help to cut down tax payer dollars.
