This paper will discuss about the issues that student nurses may encounter upon entering a new role in the graduate nursing practice. It includes some personal challenges in regards to fitting into a group of health care professionals and being part of a team, managing of tasks on time, professional challenges such as practicing the profession with full confidence and availability of support system. These challenges may influence the success in transitioning student nurse to a graduate nurse in entering the workforce.

Initially, being able to adjust and commit full responsibility in taking every task involved in care is quite intimidating for a newly graduate nurse. In placements, student nurses shadows under a registered nurse and covered somehow under the institution. I have observed that student nurses can work with limits, meaning there should be a registered nurse on her side at all times. When I was doing my placement in the Philippines. The clinical instructors would not allow the student nurses to make a decision without asking for approval. Every move and final decision must come from a registered nurse. Also, whatever issues a student nurse has committed, it is under the institutions’ umbrella, which is similar to every nursing school that caters placements. Kumaran and Carney (2014) discussed about newly qualified nurses’ experiences and feelings in transitioning from a student. The biggest step in the transition process is the independent responsibility and the need for support and time in adjusting to new roles and responsibilities. It is mentioned that there will be an increase responsibility after registration. Full responsibility and accountability will apply upon entering the new role. Furthermore, emerging difficulties may encounter knowing that a loss of student security and protection and on top of that mixed emotions of anxiety, fear and apprehension. These difficulties may result to high levels of burnout, turnover intention and lower job satisfaction compared to the more experienced colleagues. Support system coming from the experienced staff plays a major role for the new graduates to support their transition into the workforce and promote their development as satisfied, confident, flexible and resilient
