We all come from different communities and have different ethnicities, etc. One of the features that most societies share is there personal space. This boundary is roughly about 2 feet away and varies from person to person. In this week’s discussion board I decided to test out this boundary and stand closer while engaging in a conversation. My prediction was that people would get angry at me. However, it was almost the complete opposite it. This weekend one of my friends was having a get together at the lake. The Artificial Human There is a situation that most humans have encountered. People can be in public hoping and praying for a text or a notification on social media, but cringe at the idea of another person sitting next to them on public transportation and possibly striking a conversation. This is an example of the five-foot circumference that most Americans have created that they like to call “personal space”. There once was a time when people craved social interactions and face-to-face communication.…

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.…

The non-verbal norm that I decided to break was; invading a persons personal space. The person I decided to use in this experiment was my friend Annabel, the same person that I talked about in the first assignment. Even though we are close friends we do not have much contact, no hugs or anything. Therefore our personal boundaries are the same as any other set of people: six inches to a foot. Even though we are around each other a lot I decided the best time to break this non-verbal social normality was while in a sauna.…
