I grew up in a relatively small Southern California town, surrounded by shrub-covered mountains and filled with a constant, smothering heat. My house is a simple, one-floor, ranch-style on a suburban street, in the middle of a triad of my elementary school, my junior high school, and my high school. Suffice to say, school was never out of walking distance. My parents are hard-working and traditional Asian-Americans, and I grew up immersed in our Filipino culture.
