Personal Bias Before expanding my formal education, the nursing journal I received was sent unsolicited to my home address. Inclusion for receiving the journal might be related to my name residing in a large database associated with practicing nurses. The journal had a down-home feel, light reading, uplifting stories of nurses making a difference in healthcare settings. In my opinion, this subjective approach limits the educational value of the research. The findings cannot be verified or reproduced, and include the interpretations of the researchers present. Most of the studies involved small groups, thus making the generalizability to the larger population problematic (Polit & Beck, 2017). I never considered this research to be scientific, however, I also never ventured into the realm of other journals, therefore allowing myself to be tainted and single-minded when it came to the subject of nursing research.
Nursing research does have a purpose by refining and formulating theories as well as enhancing and strengthening our base of knowledge. Nursing’s present and future strength in shaping health care and policy will rest on providing clear and convincing research that demonstrates our vital role in delivering meaningful and cost-effective health care to all (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O’Grady, 2016).
