My greatest influence as I came of age was my Grandfather. My mother's father turned sixteen in 1942 and joined the Marine Corp illegally in order to fight in World War Two. This began his highly decorated career in the armed forced in which he saw action in the Philippines, Korea and in Vietnam and Laos. I was born, as his first grandchild, on the 50th anniversary of his World War Two homecoming on December 4th, 1995. With that in mind, he took a special interest in my upbringing and education. He instilled pride and an uncanny tolerance for diversity in my raising.

With his blessing, I turned to Korean culture for guidance in high school. I achieved a second degree black belt in Taekwondo at sixteen and captained a co-ed team that won a state championship through the American Taekwondo Association at seventeen. Leading this team taught me the finer workings of leadership. The skills I learned included talent management, empathy, and task oriented command. Consequently, these skills and hard physical work allowed my team to become the first female led, co-ed team to place and win at a state level.

I was born in San Jose, California and my family moved to Ohio, the heartland of America, soon after. I remember always peering through the window by the stairs as the snow fell then sledding down the snowy driveway with glee. During my childhood, I spent a year in China experiencing my cultural roots. My family then moved to Los Angeles where I have spent nearly thirteen years of my life exposed to a blend of different cultures and communities. The diversity encourages me to stay true to my background and enjoy standing out rather than fitting in.…

Before I was born my parents told me that once they knew what gender I was they were strongly influenced by the environment in which I was going to be raised for example my parents painted my room color light purple and I was going to be encouraged to be nurturing and cooperative throughout my life. Well I was born and my parents decided on how to dress, play and how to spend my time with chores. While growing up my mom was more protective and restrictive and I see my guy cousin just walking out whenever they wanted they had more freedom. At the age of 6 I only knew that the place I was supposed to be was in the house and being a “lady like” because according to my family girls are fragile and be comforted when we cry.…

I was named after my aunt, who now resides in Atlanta, because God told her that I would be pleasant and prosperous. I had a brother named James who had cerebral palsy and was paralyzed from the waist down. As a young black woman living in America, I am constantly exposed to harmful imagery and situations that attack both my race and womanhood, two very important parts of my identity. The struggles that we face as a community include but are not limited to, dehumanization and general disregard for our lives (Aiyana Stanley Jones, Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, and the countless other black wo(men) who were victims of police brutality), Mysogenoir (ie. oversexualization of our bodies, the 'welfare queens epithet, our natural hair being deemed 'unprofessional' in the workforce), cultural appropriation, everyday microaggressions, and so on. The effects of these situations on our subconscious and conscious minds sparked my desire to soothe the effects of the blatant and systematic oppression affecting us and triggered my social and intellectual awakening. My Firsthand experience of these problems fueled my search for information on the origins, historical significance, and evolution of systematic oppression and modern day racism and what I could do personally to alleviate the issue and get others involved.…

I come from a household of girls. I am the oldest of three daughters where the only male is my father- that is including pets. For most of my life, my mother (who graduated with honors from the University of Texas) was also the primary provider for my family and my father was a stay at home dad who went to college, but never graduated and was never great at school, to begin with. From an early age, my dad was the one who dressed me and interacted with me more on a daily basis up until around elementary school when he got a job- only to later become a stay at home dad again a few years later. The dynamic in my household is an interesting one although it certainly never struck me that way until I came of an age to notice that it was not a very…

Socio-autobiography There is no society where gender is considered to be insignificant. China is one such society where gender roles and inequalities have developed over time and remain present today. As I have spent the majority of my life in New Zealand, I have been exposed to many Western perspectives on gender. However, being the first generation to grow up in New Zealand meant that many traditional Chinese views on gender norms were still incorporated into my upbringing. This socio-autobiography will explore sociological gender concepts across time and cultures, and how they have shaped my life.…

I hate to think of the difference in my life should my father have been disqualified for assistance due to his addiction. I would like to think that he would put his children first, however as a substance abuse counselor I understand the power addiction can bring. Instead of fond memories, and a much greater appreciation for these things, I would be forced to remember pains of hunger, and jealousy. I shudder to think of the impact this would have had on my life because having these memories has helped shape the person I am today. No longer do I live in poverty, and I believe that my upgrade in socioeconomic status comes with a much greater respect.…
