Reflective Essay: Effective Communication In The Workplace

The most frustrating individual that I’ve ever had to work with would be my sister. While employed at the YMCA during the Fab Friday evening events, my sister was my supervisor. It was a struggle for me to take direct orders from her especially when I felt like she assigned me the tasks that she didn’t want to do. However, I managed to work through the frustrations by accepting that she was just my boss, not my sister. Even though I didn’t like to take orders from my sister, I realized that she was my boss and I needed to act like her employee and not her sister. Maybe reference something in regards to working with someone that is overbearingly bossy or controlling.

The kinds of communication situations that cause me difficulty are those dealing with stressful situations or circumstances. I find it difficult to communicate and/or be told something that is going to be controversial or bad, and I tend to put off those types of discussion. An example, this occurred to me when I worked as a child caretaker. I encountered a child that on numerous occasions would not follow and listen to my instructions. On this particular day, I told the child several times that they were only allowed to play in a

There were various topics that were decided upon that would be taught to the children that would be participating. To the female employees, my supervisor asked if anyone would be willing to teach “personal hygiene”. Even though it’s not the most pleasant and easy topic to talk about, I considered it to be a challenge and knew that I could complete the task and be proud of myself. I volunteered to take on the task because I truly cared about the children that attended this club. I consider myself to be a self-motivated individual and I am committed to any task or assignment that I am

When I was about to walked out of the fitting room area in Forever 21 located in King of Prussia Mall in Philly at around 1-2 pm. , June 5th, an African American female clerk (about 5.8 ~6 ft tall )blocked my way and asked me to hang the clothes up. The art of persuading an audience to think a certain way about a specific topic is not as simplistic as many believe. Therefore, the persuaders often have to utilize certain strategies in order to strengthen their views, which in the end gives them the upper hand. Throughout this essay, I will be discussing how my previous essays directly correlate to one other in many different ways including the utilization of multiple articles, rhetorical strategies, and the use of ATCC (Author, Title, Credibility, Claim) and analysis as to why the essays contains these writing strategies. First off, in my essays one and three they both posses rhetorical strategies that are used to strengthen the authors objective and make their points more credible to the reader. These essays are specifically focused around modern day technology and how people function in today’s society.…

When I was a teenager I worked in a donut shop. It so happened that the place was sold to a family and was not a corporately owned. In the hope of saving money, they decided to cut labor and asked the hostess’ to do all the cleaning, including the washrooms. The age I was at cleaning was not my cup of tea, therefore, I made it clear to the owners I will do everything else, but clean the washrooms, as I don’t even do that at home, and my mom wouldn’t even let me. The owner’s reply was, “you people should be used to that kind of work, what do you mean you can’t do it,” and a whole lot of other inappropriate things that I won’t get into.…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

Another instance in which I utilize my communication skills occurs whenever I am having a problem with someone, which isn’t very often. Instead of ignoring them, I communicate my issue with them in an effort to resolve the problem and move forward. No matter how frustrated someone makes me, I rarely intentionally avoid them because I believe that if I can effectively communicate the perspective I hold on a complication with someone else, I can resolve the problem or, at worse, agree to disagree. Communication remains a significantly important strength to possess owing to its repeated use throughout one’s…

After I have viewed how they use their communication to be assertive, I should practice these techniques to myself. For example, I should try using the desensitization technique. This is when I think of a situation when I’m usually non-assertive, determine my desired behavior, imagine myself executing that behavior in my head until the anxiety of it goes away, then think of the next step to reach what I want and visualize myself in that step until discomfort vanishes as well. This imagining until I’m comfortable technique keeps repeating until I have accomplished telling someone my wants/needs are. This technique is all mental, until I am completely comfortable and am ready to give it a try physically.…
