Application Essay: Why I Want To Study Psychology

For me, psychology is the most relatable and fascinating area of study imaginable. I believe the main reason I find psychology so fascinating is the diversity in both the areas of study and the application.
After studying it for only a few short months I knew that my passion would lead me to study it at University and go on to more meaningful things than I had imagined myself capable of.
Abnormal psychology definitively intrigues me the most. It is fascinating to think that from the very beginning of our lives our personal identity begins to build up, as we are constantly influenced by our environment and external factors. However, only one gene or chromosome can lead to abnormal development, making the build-up of personal identity much harder. I want to be the person to find the ways in which an application of this subject can benefit children disadvantaged by those genetic syndromes.
By taking part in several online courses on FutureLearn, covering topics like anxiety, depression, dementia, schizophrenia and psychosis, I was able to increase my understanding of human nature and mental illness. In addition, apart from providing me with the amazing knowledge of those disorders, those courses added onto my comprehension on the nature vs. nurture

In addition, Luton Central Library provided me with the opportunity to get myself familiar with some psychological literature from different areas of the field, including classics like „The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat“ by Oliver Sacks and „Theories of Developmental Psychology“ by Patricia H. Miller, but also pieces like „The Power Of Habit“ by Charles Duhigg, discovering the brain functions behind habit loops, and applying it to occupational psychology by discussing habits within many individuals and
