Individuals, in both personal and professional lives use ethics as a guide when completing daily tasks. Personal ethics is based on one’s personal beliefs, values, and morals and is used across all aspects of task completion in the individual’s day-to-day life. “The mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values” (Professional Development and Practice Competencies In Clinical Social Work, 1995). These core values, embraced by social workers throughout the profession’s history, are the foundation of social work’s unique purpose and perspective” (Professional Development and Practice Competencies In Clinical Social Work, 1995). Ethics, as it pertains to one’s professional career, is a guide broken down into core areas as it relates to the social worker’s professional practice. The practicing social worker has the Code of Ethics to use as a guide when practicing in any social work field. “The profession has an obligation to articulate its basic values, ethical principles, and ethical standards” (Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers, 2011). “The NASW Code of Ethics sets forth these values, principles, and standards to guide social workers’ conduct” (Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers, 2011).
