The punishment that the slaves faced was unbearable, they were beaten by a large whip with many different strings on the end with pieces of bone that would rip skin out of their backs, this technique is called flogging. The net that was hanging on the sides of the ship was not for safety, but instead it was used to keep the slaves in the boat. The slaves were not starved on the boat, instead, they were force-fed just enough to keep them going, the slave traders did not want to lose any more profit. These people felt lots of pain, flogging was the punishment of choice, and they would be flogged if they were not moving fast enough. Starvation was prevalent, the people were malnourished, they were only fed enough to stay alive for another week, and nothing nutritious was given to them. Sickness was always lurking in the shadows because everyone was so close together, if one person became sick, three more would be sick within a week. Sickness also created waste, they bodies were left to rot away in a corner, and so was the bodily waste, this arose some interesting smells. All in all, the physical state of these people were pushing the limits of humanity, instead they were treated as animals; pain was suffered through, starvation was always there, and sickness caught it’s way throughout the ship, slowly but
