During my sophomore year as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, I was accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. I do not exaggerate when I say that this program changed the entire course of my life: helping me to fully understand my interests, altering my professional goals, and providing me with a viable path for my passions. As a first generation student, I had very little knowledge about how to navigate the sphere of undergraduate education and in the same vein, I knew next to nothing about graduate school. Before McNair I was never aware of what graduate school could offer me and the program, and the people it connected me with, became my greatest source of support as I made the journey into pursuing my doctorate.…
Freeman Hrabowski Colleges Prepare People for Life and Liz Addison Two Years Are Better than Four both explore the idea of how college is the right choice for the moment and the further. Even though Hrabowski and Addison both address that college gives people a platform to start a better life, Hrabowski provides a more convincing argument for he has a better emphasis and understanding on higher education's effect on people, college success rate information and better real-life examples. Hrabowski provides a more convincing argument with a better emphasis and understanding on higher education. For one Hrabowski “has been the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 1992” (255). Being the president of a university…
Throughout my college career, I have had many memorable achievements and gained lots of knowledge on valuable lessons. Yet there are specific lessons and achievements that stand out. Last year, I had the privilege of being asked to join Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society at UCR, which recruits the top 20% of all undergraduate students. By joining and becoming actively involved with the organization, I was fortunate enough to be offered the position of Vice- President of the organization, which is the most meaningful achievement I have had so far.…
Since day one of my freshmen year, I knew I wanted to make my education count 100%. Throughout my life, I’ve had my fair share of good and bad decisions but the best decision of my life was to get my grades straight and focus on school. For the past two and a half years, i’ve put my absolute best into coming out on top and so far i’ve succeeded. Being invited into the National Honors Society is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments that i’m very proud of. When I was a bit younger, around seventh or eighth grade, my grades weren’t anything I took a lot of pride in.…
George Mason University makes student’s academic careers a top priority when it comes to student success. To defend this statement; interviews, flyers, and George Mason’s Student Support Resources website became helpful evidence to verify Mason’s graduation rates and percent of students who have landed jobs straight out of college. In Longerbeam’s article “Challenge and Support for the 21st Century: A Mixed-Methods Study of College Student Success” Longerbeam performs a holistic approach to the study concerning college freshmen in transition and how student’s academic success can find a correlation between challenge and success. According to Longerbeam’s research on student’s transition to college, the findings concluded that students found faculty members that were helpful to them and shared an emotional intelligence connection to them (Longerbeam:42).…
There are so many dimensions to counseling; guiding students with their academic path, creating an environment where they feel safe and supported, being a counselor and identifying risk factors. Beyond these dimensions however I believe the two most important characteristic when defining a counselor are adaptability and resilience. Academic counselors come across diverse populations and I believe there is no standard process when guiding students. The counselor should actively listen to the student and build a professional relationship in order to build trust. Equally important is the ability of the counselor to be resilient and to teach resilience.…
In high school, I prided myself on my grades. I was an honors student who got straight A’s, was very involved, and held several leadership positions. Over time, I realized that regardless of how many accolades I received, those successes would be short-lived and would only benefit me. Contrastingly, how I treated other people had the potential to make a long-lasting impact. Once I realized this, I began to place a higher value on my role as a friend to go to for advice, rather than just being the person to ask about the homework.…

My most meaningful achievement to date is balancing a job and five AP classes this senior year. I know that this might not be a real achievement to others, but I feel proud of myself for being able to go to school and going to work right after and still being able to take on responsibilities at home. Some days I do feel stressed out and tired, but I stay optimistic because I know that working hard always pays off. This year was the most challenging because I had to focused on my classes, college and scholarship applications, and FAFSA. At this time I do have to admit that it was a lot of responsibilities that I had to get done, but I was able to manage my time and get them done with the help from my counselor, college coach, and the Gear Up…

Leaving a Legacy Abraham Lincoln once said, “In the end, it 's not the years in your life that count. It 's the life in your years.” (Quotes) The quality of a person’s life can be determined by many different components. Some people define their lives on things such as wealth or materialistic items while others base theirs on the experiences they have gone through or the knowledge they have gained over time.…
"You can and you will go to college and I will help you make it happen. " These words were spoke to me by my high school business teacher, Edward Betts. Mr. Bett 's was the most blunt, snarky, funniest, and outspoken man you would have ever met. He wasn 't just these things though, he was also the most helpful, caring, hardworking, and driven man I have ever met. He was one of the two teachers that have ever made an impact on my education from kindergarten to my senior year.…
