Quiz 4: What is a Hero?
In my definition, a hero is someone who does courageous deeds simply because he/she possesses the ability to do so. These brave deeds range from a plain gesture, such as defending someone else against a bully to extraordinary actions, such as fighting off a dangerous assailant unarmed. A hero does something in order to help others who are weaker compared to him/her in that particular area without searching for honor or glory.
In the movie series Person of Interest, two men banded together to fight off the evil crimes that are happening or will happen throughout America. These men worked secretly, without the knowledge of the public, and were prepared to sacrifice their life to save the victim of the crime. As long as the result of their accomplishments as well as the memories of these heroes exist, it is highly probable that the heroes will always be remembered as one. Despite so, the amount of time a person is considered a ‘hero’ is subjective to each person. For example, a man who decided to save a child from a fire is deemed a ‘hero’. To the society, this man might be considered a hero only for a short time or as long as people remember him. But for the child, he would always be a ‘hero’.
On the other hand, a Homeric hero is someone who fought and died bravely in battle. A typical Homeric hero would possess both great honor and high status gained from defeating other men with similar or greater status in battle. Homer’s ‘hero’ has similarities and differences compared to my definition of a ‘hero’. For example, both my definition of a ‘hero’ and Homer’s ‘hero’ have a remarkable amount of courage. However, Homeric heroes would risk their life to gain more honor in order to be recognized as a ‘hero’, while my definition of ‘hero’ would not purposely seek out a chance to increase their
