Person-Based Approaches In Counselling

Decent Essays
In the context of therapy first impressions are very important. It is often the case that a client seeking any form of psychotherapy may have been coping for a very long time with various life problems on their own. These life problems may have become a "'burden"' for member of the client's family and friendship group due to the frequency with which the client talks about them, as such a client will commonly feel that they do not get listened to. Indeed the very act of having a someone just to listen can have quite dramatic effects from the very first session. Within counselling based approaches, that is the person centred approach an essential component, one which should apply to all forms of therapy is to put yourself in your client's shoes.

You can support clients in this process by, encouraging them to reach a decision. Good planning requires to be able to research all the relevant information about the client and available options and resources open to the client in their circumstances. The next requirement is to be able to identify all the tasks that need to be completed, who needs to complete those tasks and the timelines in which they need to be completed. Essay On Ambiguity

The crisis counselor needs to have a tolerance for ambiguity. We need to walk into any circumstance without personal opinions or feeling for the event. For an example, if we walked into a scene where there had been a traumatic event. We have to be able to bring back a sense of order from a chaotic scene with none of our own biases. We also need to keep a calm, neutral demeanor when going into a high stress situation or we would permit ourselves to be swept away from our own emotional reactions and responses.…

I think I sort of answered this question in the previous question. Being authentic and establishing a rapport with Doris and providing her with the comfort of experiencing my genuineness toward her will afford her the strength to openly disclose her emotions, struggles and purpose for the change. In addition to dispelling her incongruence, she will be able to openly she her own reality and accept her truths. Allowing Doris to take the directive role is key to resolving her concerns and allowing her to be who she see her self as in her life. I’m sure there are feelings about herself and her husband that Doris is currently unwillingly to accept.…

Teenage plastic surgery has been around for decades, but most recently the amount of teens getting cosmetic surgery has been increasing at an abnormal speed over the years. Today’s society focuses more on looks than anything else that should actually matter. Teenagers and young adults want to be the most beautiful because others make them feel self conscious of themselves. There are many other reasons to explain why the younger generation wants to reach high expectations for not only themselves but for others around them also. Although a lot of teens, both male and female, are very attractive these days, the less fortunate people who aren’t as beautiful or the people who have less self confidence are turning to cosmetic surgery, and increasing…

Assessment of The Whole Self The provision of evaluation entails the collection of data to identify, examine, assess, and address the problems, issues, and situations of clients in the counseling relationship. Assessments likewise help in determining what questions to ask and how the resulting information will be utilized in arriving at a diagnosis (Jones, 2010). Whether a clinician practices in a school, private practice, or other health care settings, assessment play an integral role (Hutchinson, 2015). Client perception between the counsellor and client is also another crucial aspect in counselling. This can cause problems in counselling as the client has to aware of the counsellors unconditional positive regard and empathy towards them. If the client is unable to establish this unconditional positive regard and empathy being displayed by the counsellor then this may result in them being unwilling and reluctant in being fully honest and truthful with the counsellor and thus hinder both the communication and the therapeutic alliance between them (Rogers, 1957;…

    Pluralism In Counselling

    • 2 Pages

In 2006, a pluralistic approach to counselling and psychotherapy was developed (McLeod & Cooper 2007) which embraced the concept of pluralism, where a question was deemed as having multiple truths, rather than one specific answer (Cooper, 2015). It is rooted in a pluralistic viewpoint which advocates that mental health issues stem from a number of contributing factors and no one approach works best, but instead, clients need diverse approaches at different times. Pluralistic practice then draws on concepts from varying therapeutic modalities, where therapists and clients engage in collaborative dialogue to determine what the client wants and needs by formulating goals and deciding on how these might by achieved by various tasks and methods…

This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…

The therapist it seems must come to the relationship being fully self aware and able to leave any of their own ‘baggage’ outside of the session. If this is not possible, it would be important to communicate what is happening to the client so that the psychological contact remains and the therapist is able to enter the world of the client unhindered. The client needs help and the counsellor is there to help. The fourth condition necessary for therapeutic change is Unconditional Positive Regard, “The therapist experiences unconditional positive regard for the client” (Rogers,1957) described by Means and Thorne as “the label given to the fundamental attitude of the person-centred counsellor towards her client.…

It is also very necessary to help the clients pinpoint their own personal strengths, understand what’s hindering them from using available resources, and to have them specifically state what they want they want in life and how they want to live it. Professional boundaries/roles on the therapist behalf is to be explicitly stated before the therapy is in session. Maybe also a little clarification of the rules of therapy and what therapy is exactly since individuals tend to have misconstrued information about therapy in general. Some important characteristics that a good counselor should have is the willingness to listen, to provide encouragement, to be empathetic, to be nonjudgmental, to have patience, and to most of all uphold the promise to keep things confidential unless that client is at risk for harming themselves as well as others.…

I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…
