During the 11th century the Greeks had flourishing colonies established in Asia minor. They were independent from both mainland and the ancient near East. However the ancient near East kingdoms were greedy and fights occurred to maintain their independence. Eventually the Greek cities were conquered by king Crusius in the kingdom of Lydia. The Greeks mere presence there was a cause of the Persian wars.
