Persevering for All Not all heroes wear capes. Not all heroic people become known. The Oxford Dictionary definition of a hero is “a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities” (en.oxforddictionaries.com). The admiration does not need to come from more than one person. There are many people that perform actions that are heroic and go unnoticed by the general public. A firefighter, cop, a next door neighbor, or even oneself can be a hero. These people may be admired only by the one person they are performing an outstanding achievement towards or for, and no one else. Martin Luther King Jr. however, is a man who fits the Oxford definition quite well and beyond. He was a civil rights activist and the …show more content…
He was originally named Michael King after his father. His father had gone to Germany where he was inspired by a guy named Martin Luther. He then decided to change his name and his 5-year-old sons name (history.com). Michael King Jr. is now Martin Luther King Jr. and his parents were now Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams. Martin was their second child of three, but their first male. Martin Luther King Jr. had an older sister named Christine, and a younger brother named Daniel (thekingcenter.org). Throughout his life he was loved by his family. However, that did not prevent him from the prejudice and discrimination that occurred outside of his family. King grew an extreme hatred towards segregation after he attended Morehouse College at the age of 15 in 1944. He experienced sharing the same church as white people and was able to eat anywhere. This was different from what he was used to and it opened his eyes as to how wrong the life he had been living was. He knew something had to change. At Morehouse he studied medicine and law however, in his senior year he decided to enter the ministry. He grew up to become a minister taking after his father’s footsteps. He graduated in 1948 and proceeded to further his education at Boston University where he studied man’s relationship to God. He received a doctorate for his studies in 1955, but not before receiving a bachelor of divinity degree in 1951 from Crozer Theological Seminary. King met his wife, Coretta Scott in Boston and was married in 1953. The year 1955 marked the start of Kings remarkable
