Perseverance

Perseverance is repetitive action against an obstacle or challenge, withstanding until the difficulty is defeated. “Invictus,” by William Ernest Henley, is a poem that elaborates on the struggles in life, and how all are in command of their mind, body, and spirit. It has a resilient speaker that endures through the harsh circumstances bestowed upon them. On the other hand, “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, writes of a frail young woman, named Johnsy, who refuses to fight back when she is afflicted with pneumonia. Because of this, the speaker of “Invictus” can offer advice to Johnsy on how to persevere.

To begin, Johnsy from “The Last Leaf” does not defend against her obstacle, pneumonia, suggesting that she does not illustrate perseverance. Her story begins as pneumonia spreads throughout Johnsy’s village of Greenwich, New York. A small woman,

All throughout the poem, the speaker describes the obstacles they had to endure, the strength they displayed, and the conclusions they came to. In the last stanza, the speaker of “Invictus” realizes. “It matters not how strait the gate/ How charged with punishments the scroll,/ I am the master of my fate/ I am the captain of my soul” (13-16). Much confidence flows from the speaker as they determine that even if their chance of success is narrow, even if they are prone to failure, they have control of their own life and spirit. His obscured obstacle, fate and life itself, batters upon the speaker, yet he remains strong. A foggy, bumpy path lays in front of the speaker, they know that, but they believe in themself. The speaker has already gone through so much, why give up now? They demonstrate true perseverance in “Invictus” because they are able to keep pushing through any challenges that threaten to bring them down. The speaker is certain that they can keep going if they have

In the poems “The Centaur,” by May Swenson, and “Untitled,” by Anonymous, the idea of resilience is brought up in very engaging ways. Both authors successfully convey a strong message using opposite techniques. The major aspect these poems use to juxtapose each other is the author’s amount of description in their poems. “The Centaur” is written with an abundance of description and imagery, while “Untitled” is written specifically in short, brief lines. The detail used in “The Centaur” effectually summons vivid images in the reader’s mind.…

When you hear the word home, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the place where you were raised, or where you’re currently residing? Do you think of something more emotional such as a person that you are most comfortable with, perhaps even yourself? Different people have different definitions of the word home. Homer uses it in a more literal way in his epic poem “The Odyssey” and Oliver used the word in a more spiritual way in her poem “The Journey”.…

The Poem “Live is Fine” by James Mercer Langston Hughes is very alike his other poems. However, this poem is not one of his most well-known works. This poem tells us a story about a male with a happy soul and his capacity of staying upbeat in the face of his own despair. It is musical and strong and its structure looks like the lyrics of a blues song. It contains six verses with different chorus at the end of each.…

“For the Anniversary of My Death” and “The Nail” are considered as the main turning point in W.S Merwin’s use of stylistic approach to poetry. In almost all of his poems, he virtually uses no punctuation of any kind as his choices of words are simpler. Still present in these poems are the poet’s fascination with death, the spiritual, ruination, and the natural. These poems capture the facets of Merwin’s 1960s style and the use of imagery. They are also presented in stanzas, which are irregular, but given the link between the stanzas, the poems suggest that an inverted sonnet was used by the poet.…

The Journey of a Changed Heart Enlightenment generally comes in increments and rarely with the flash of the proverbial light bulb switching on. Scripture portrays truth as coming “line upon line, here a little, there a little” (The Holy Bible). Within Antonio Machado’s poem “Last Night As I Was Sleeping,” the reader travels through one person’s journey of religious awakening through the use of metaphor, diction, and symbolism. The poem describes baptism, conversion from wickedness to righteousness, recognition of the Spirit and finally understanding God’s love.…
