I have stayed up three times all through the night doing homework this semester. I also work about 12-20 hours a week on top of studying fulltime just to make ends meet, as I am determined to not pull out a loan to cover living expenses. I am not a stranger to hard work as I started my first summer job when I was twelve years old, which enabled me to save money so that I could do some traveling when I was 18 years old. Though I did not know it at the time my parents did well at teaching me to be a person that had characteristics of GRIT. Many people might think that GRIT is a naturally obtained characteristic. However, I am of the persuasion that GRIT is taught and learned. I only say this based off my own experience as a child; I am very grateful for the way that my parents taught me responsibility by giving me chores and trusting me with responsibly at home. When I would complete my task as required my parents would allow me to experience the reward of my efforts. It started with small responsibilities such as mowing the lawn, but as I got older they entrusted me with more responsibilities. By the time I was sixteen I had learned all the skills I needed to know to completely remodel my own room, which included tearing walls out, installing doors, changing light fixtures, and painting all by myself.
