Perseverance In Homeless Bird, By Gloria Whelan

Having perseverance can change your life. Persevering for your freedom can lead to your happiness. Koly, a 13 year old girl that lives in India, just got married to a boy she doesn’t know. She will have to find a way to get her freedom back. In Homeless Bird, Gloria Whelan illustrates that when you persevere, you can do anything. Koly needs to have perseverance to survive at the Mehta’s house. After Hari’s death Mrs. Mehta orders Koly around the house by saying, ‘"Koly, we need water!" "Koly, sweep the courtyard! The geese have soiled it." "Koly, the clothes you washed are still dirty!" "Koly, the spices you ground for the masalas are too coarse!"’ (Whelan 51) This proves that Koly needs perseverance in order to stay under control at the Mehta’s house. As Mrs. Mehta gives Koly chores, she needs to just do the chores and persevere until she finds a way to be off on her own. Koly uses this perseverance to help keep her dream of leaving Mrs. Mehta alive. …show more content…
Mehta. She tries to get her pension for herself but learns she needs a place to live on her own. With all of this on her mind she thought “..I did not think to run away today or tomorrow, but as long as I had the thought of someday, I could stand Sass's scolding. To leave would take courage, and of that I did not have much.” (Whelan 86-87) This illustrates that Koly will need to have perseverance in order to achieve her dream of escaping Sass/Mrs. Mehta. With enough perseverance Koly might be able to make herself happy and have freedom. Having this perseverance will keep koly motivated and have hope that her dreams will one day come
