Perseverance is defined as the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult (Perseverance, 2016). The theme of perseverance is shown a variety of ways in literature and art, including through image, text, and through context. Of all of the themes relevant to the selected works from Literature: A World of Writing, perseverance has by far had the greatest impact on the development of the pieces.
The speaker, in Annabel Lee, a poem by Edgar Allen Poe in Literature: A World of Writing, shows perseverance as he finds comfort in nature after the agony of loss (Poe, 1849). The image is sketched with a subtle impressionistic aesthetic, containing an almost invisible line. The effective depiction of light, another important value of impressionistic art, unexpectedly conveys the sadness of the woman (Sayre, 2012). The representational composition shows the somber woman strolling symbolically towards her “sepulcher by the sea,” another name for Annabel’s tomb, as so eloquently called in Poe’s work (Whistler, 2014, p.387). Whistler’s analogy to the poem stands on its own as a reflection of the perseverance theme. The cool colors of the design do not limit the balance of the somber theme. The beauty and love for the subject is captured by Whistler. The theme mimics Poe’s poem depicting the woman’s persevering the winds that bring her illness, only to be marched towards her death at sea by a supernatural force.
