Persepolis: The story of a child hood is movie made from a graphic novel and autobiography by Marjane Satrapi. The story is told from a first person perspective by young author Marji. She had witnesses the entire Islamic Revolution; including the fall of the pro-western Shah republic in 1979, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and the Iran-Iraq War in 1980; throughout her childhood. The author had painted us a vivid portrait of Iran during and after the political turmoil with her personal experience.
Marji’s parents are well educated middle class members who are passionate about politics, under their influence Marji also became a social activist. However after the Islamic revelation, Iran became an oppressive theocracy and went to war with Iraq. During the Iran Iraq war, inorder to recruit more soldiers, the Iranian government use religion as a tool to enlist more soldiers. One of Marji’s neighbor told Marji’s mother that her oldest son has been given a plastic key at school. The school leaders told her son that if he goes to war and dies, the key will get him into heaven; there will be anything he desires in haven: woman, luxury house, yacht etc. The woman cried to marji’s mom about she was a faithful believer all her life, now the government want to trick her son to die for nothing by using a plastic key. All of these made her question her faith. One rumor about Islam is that when a faithful Muslim died they will get 72 virgins in haven. In fact the concept of 72 virgins does not appear anywhere in Quran or any of the scripture. The promise of “woman in haven” was uses as a recruiting strategy back in the days are still applicable today; the ISIS today are still using the 72 virgins in heaven to motivate young suicide bomber to go through with their
