Persephone Research Paper

The myth of Persephone is an ancient Greek myth used to explain the change of the seasons. Persephone was the sweet daughter of Greek goddess Demeter who was kidnapped by Hades and later became the Queen of the Underworld. When she was with her mother, the land would be fertile and fruitful, the period of spring and summer. When she was away from her mother, the land was not fertile and would not produce crops, the period of autumn and winter. This was the myth that explained the change of seasons and the cycle of nature’s death and rebirth (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Before modern science, myths were used to explain things about nature.
Pandora's Box is another story in Greek mythology. The story is from Hesiod’s Works and Days (qtd. Sjsu.edu). Pandora opened the box, which was a large jar, that contained all of the evils and troubles of the world. The lid was closed and only “Hope” remained inside the box, stuck under the lid. Today the phrase "open Pandora's box" means to that an ordinary or small act may see innocent enough but could turn out to have detrimental, harmful, or unpredictable results. Hercules, the son of Zeus, could be considered the first superhero. This boy, named Heracles, would become stronger than any man and any god. Hercules became a great hero in Greece, fulfilling Apollo’s prophecy that he would grow into an immortal and instead of dying as a man, he would become a god. In later years, the legend of Heracles would become famous. The Romans worshipped him as a hero and a mentor, and in their translation, he was called Hercules (A&E Networks History).
