Water flowing over asphalt pavement collects particles of dirt, deicing chemicals, automotive fluids and other contaminants. The runoff may flow into a storm sewer or directly into a nearby stream or lake, taking the contaminants with it. By containing the runoff, permeable asphalt keeps the contaminants from entering the water system. Furthermore, although almost all new asphalt pavement contains a certain percentage of recycled asphalt, many asphalt manufacturers are incorporating a higher percentage when producing porous …show more content…
The permeable asphalt used today will not hold up under heavy loads or high use. It is therefore unsuitable for airport runways, high-traffic roadways, warehouse docks, weigh stations or similar areas that receive either a high volume of traffic or heavily laden vehicles.
Is Permeable Asphalt Difficult to Maintain?
All pavements need proper maintenance to achieve it full life expectancy. Most of the maintenance procedures for permeable asphalt are similar to the procedures for traditional asphalt pavement. However, it is critical that permeable asphalt be kept clean. If the pores in the pavement become clogged with dirt or chemicals, water will not be able to penetrate the surface. Most permeable asphalt pavement needs to be professionally cleaned every six months with a power washer or vacuum.
