Permanent Midnight is a story of a man named Jerry Stahl and his drug addiction. The film starts off with Jerry working at a fast food restaurant. Moments later, a blonde woman pulls up to the drive-through window. Her name was Kitty, who was a former drug addict who had been clean for years. Kitty asked Jerry if he would like to get a cup of coffee, but they ended up in a motel room, and spent a lot of time there. Jerry opens up with Kitty and tells her his life story and everything that had happened to him during his addiction. Flashbacks started, and showed what Jerry’s life had been like while he was on drugs. Jerry’s drug addiction on prescription medications started while he was in New York City. Once Jerry started a methadone program to get clean, he meets a drug dealer named Gus. Gus then introduced him to cocaine and dilaudid, increasing his drug habit. Eventually, Jerry loses his second job that Sandra got him, and Sandra herself. After telling Jerry that she was pregnant, Sandra throws him out disgusted at the fact he decided to use after being told the news. Though this happened, Sandra decides that Jerry should be there for the birth of his daughter. Jerry accepts, and says he will be clean to have the ability to watch over Nina. After picking up his daughter, he goes to a party house, expecting to buy more drugs. After pulling up to the house, Jerry sees Gus is standing outside waiting on him. Due to the fact Jerry had the baby, he made a decision to give Gus the money to go buy his drugs, instead of taking Nina into the house with him. Moments later, Jerry realizes that Gus had not came back with his drugs. Jerry then gets out of the car, with his baby, and tries to find Gus inside the house. Gus is nowhere to be found. Without drugs or money, Jerry had to go to his other option. Jerry decided to make a visit to his other dealer, Dita, who had supplied him with heroin and commonly shot up with him. After Dita answers the door, she shuts it in his face after telling him how bad he looked, and that it had gone too far. She then goes and gets him a small amount of heroin, and tell him that he is never allowed back. In the car, with his infant daughter next to him, Jerry goes for the quickest relief, and shoots up heroin in a neck vein. He continues to drive, eventually getting pulled over.
