For those who may not know, Perks of Being a Wallflower is a 2012 film by Stephen Chbosky about a socially awkward freshman in high school who befriends a quirky group of seniors. With these friends, Charlie, the young boy, discovers music, love, and friendship (The Perks, 2015). David Bowie, the musician, has been an icon in these groups for decades; therefore, the song was an ideal choice for this scene. In the same way Bowie was attempting to portray in his songs, the whole purpose behind this film is to demonstrate to others that while some people may be unlike them, they are equally as important. Charlie struggled throughout his life to find purpose and a place where he belongs, but he eventually did. Additionally, Charlie developed feelings for one of his new friends, Sam; near the end of the film the two become a couple. During this memorable scene, Charlie stares in admiration at Sam while she is standing in the bed of the truck with her hands outstretched.
