The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel in the form of letters written by a 15-year-old freshman boy named Charlie to an anonymous friend whose identity is never revealed. Charlie is a very smart boy, some would even call him a genius, and is terrified of starting high school. This happens to be the reason he started writing the letters in which he describes his experiences and feelings. He starts by talking about his friend, Michael, who committed suicide and says how much he misses him and feels alone. He tries to continue hanging out with Michael's girlfriend, Susan, but she had changed a lot and ignores him. Then he describes his family which consists of his mom, dad, brother and sister. Brad is the quarterback and is worried that someone will find out he's gay. As far as school goes, Charlie is a straight A's student. He even meets with the advanced english teacher, Bill, who gives him extra books to read and write reports on. He loves reading. On Halloween, Patrick and Sam take Charlie to see their friends reenact The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Charlie loves it and starts writing for Mary Elizabeth's fanzine called Punk Rocky. He also meets Craig, Sam's new boyfriend. Then he describes his immediate family because they go to his great aunt's place for Thanksgiving. He describes his grandfather as a very annoying and slightly racist person who always drinks way too much and then causes fights in the family. Sometime after Thanksgiving, Charlie goes to a party and exchanges Secret Santa gifts. From Sam, he gets a typewriter and she kisses him. He gives Patrick a mixtape and reads his favourite poem (which happens to be some sort of a suicide letter from an unknown person) and everyone loves it. Charlie's birthday is on 24th of November.
