A writer’s job is to use words to immerse a reader into a world of adventure and thought. To be able to do this requires great skills and many years of writing experience. F. Scott Fitzgerald was such a person who dedicatedly wrote through poems and plays during his earlier years and fiction later on, to convey little bits of himself in his writing. In his short story, “Babylon Revisited,” he uses the power of words to transport readers through feelings of an experience he knows personally. The main character of his story, Charlie, reflects Fitzgerald himself and his struggle as a former alcoholic who changed for the sake of his family.…

This Summer, I decided to read the The Color Purple by Alice Walker, a novel about the life of African-American woman in a post-slavery society based in the South, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, a book about a socially isolated high-schooler who tries to navigate through life by experiencing different emotions with a new set of friends. When choosing from an array of book collections, it definitely took me some time to pick two to read. The criteria that these books had met was that they had to be works that I could relate to and had to have merit. So, the reason why I chose The Color Purple is because it is a critically acclaimed piece of literature, and it is potent within the Black community, and I felt like it resonates with our time frame. And, the reason why I chose The Perks of Being a Wallflower is due to my love coming-of age books that take place in a high school setting.…

You plunge a thin, wooden stirring stick into the black sludge the barista dubbed a “Caramel Espresso,” circling your hand back and forth in a desperate attempt at forcing a few flakes of sugar to dissolve. It’s March, possibly the month you detest most, and you’re sitting outside in the biting Chicago breeze. Notes of grease and cigarette smoke dance on the cold spring air, and you wrinkle your nose with disdain. You despise this city—and this café, too; sappy eighties’ tunes play on repeat, and the cookies taste distinctly of cardboard. Still, you find yourself back here nearly every day, gazing out at the teeming masses of city-goers from the same off-kilter plastic chair.…
