In the book The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I have learned many things from this book. Such as, you should never settle for less than what you deserve, never care what people think about you, and always be free minded. This story is written in a series of letters by a high school freshman named Charlie. He writes to an anonymous friend, and these letters explain his everyday life, problems, and accomplishments. Charlie begins to write due to the unexpected suicide of his friend Michael. The first day in woodshop, Charlie meets a senior named Patrick, and then he introduces Charlie to his step-sister Sam. Charlie meets the rest of Sam and Patrick’s group. Charlie starts to feel like he finally belongs somewhere. Charlie has an English teacher …show more content…
Charlie feels like the death of Helen is his fault because she died going to buy Charlie a second birthday present. At different parts of the story, Charlie helps people deal with their difficult personal issues: cheating, abortion, and drug use. These individuals have been sexually abused; Charlie doesn’t react strongly to this until the end of the book when Charlie is about to have sex with Sam and he realizes that Aunt Helen had sexually abused him. He has a breakdown but Sam is there to comfort him. When Sam leaves for college Charlie starts to have problems again. His parents find him naked and unconscious, and then he is hospitalized. After going to therapy for several weeks, he finally realizes that his Aunt Helen had molested him when he was younger. At the end of the book, Charlie announces that he no longer needs to write letters. Charlie believes that he is a wallflower; is a free spirit and is in control of his own life. My favorite part of the book was when Sam and Patrick tell Charlie he is a wallflower because after that he finally feels like he belongs somewhere.
