Patrick Suskinds book Perfume: The Story of a Murderer the minor characters play an extensive role in the development of Jean-Baptiste Genouilles character. Suskinds development of a third dimensional character shaped by his upbringing in eighteenth century France shows how everyday interactions can outline your future. Beginning as an unwanted child left for dead, Grenouille never had the compassionate upbringing that children desire and need in order to live a successful life. This led to the mindset of Grenouille that he was expendable. Exploiting these emotions directed him to his future, a serial killer. Grenouille did not realize her feature because he was only after one thing. The eye for an eye plays into this piece of the novel because it shows how his mind worked. The people he was bounced around to treated him as if he was expendable in turn that learned behavior caused him to think of his victims the same. All he had wanted was the scent, just like the others wanted a paycheck. Perhaps it could be said that if his childhood was not harsh and unpleasant like it was he may have grew up to live a successful life.
