Arts administration is the foundation of any strong performing arts initiative. These kinds of initiatives are exceptionally beneficial to the communities they serve. The performing arts give access to training and personal development that most children and young people do not learn in school. The arts build skills in discipline, respect, teamwork, and collaboration and develop critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to analyze and critique their work and the work of others. The arts provide a safe environment for this encounter.
Often times, racial and ethnic minorities find themselves in locations or under certain levels of financial strain that make it nearly impossible for their families to pay tuition and an arts training school. This scholarship allowed me to take an additional jazz class, which opened my world to the performing arts beyond classical ballet. The mix of disciplines allowed me to develop additional strengths as a dancer and taught me the importance of time management as I worked hard to maintain my grades while juggling my after school classes. I absolutely cherished my dance classes, as did some of my fellow dancers, who otherwise would not be able to afford tuition. It was this background that made me feel personally committed to give back to those communities that need the skills and environments and strong arts foundation
