Steroids can be anabolic, produces muscle growth, or synthetic, man made (Mayo Clinic Staff). Anabolic effects in men include forming breasts, baldness, shrunken testicles, infertility, impotence, and many more that can be serious and lead to cancer (Mayo Clinic Staff). Anabolic effects in women include a deeper voice, increased body hair, baldness, and infrequent or absent periods, which could lead to infertility (Mayo Clinic Staff). The Olympics, when they began, were a fairly even match of who is better. Now the olympics is a game of who gets caught, and who doesn’t (“The Physiology…”). In 1999 the World Anti Doping Act ,WADA, was assigned to all drug testing in the olympics and began to make a drastic change (“The Physiology…”). Over 30 athletes have been removed from the Olympic games to to drug use (“The Physiology…”). These numbers sadly do not compare to baseball. Over 50 MLB players have been suspended and fined since 2005 do to the use of drugs (“Effects…”). One of the most known steroid users in the MLB is Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees third baseman has been suspended forty seven times, twelve for more than ten games, nineteen for more than fifty games, and three for more than one hundred games (“Why…”). Some argue that the drugs have been planted, but this is wouldn’t matter (“Why…”). Officials test the testosterone and epitestosterone ratio to convict players (“Why…”). Many ask how do they get these drugs. Many players get their PEDs from an organization known as BALCO, Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operation (“Why…”). A home run could change the course of a game, so if players use steroids, it will be much more common and keep you on the edge of your seat more. All of this is true, but think about your favorite baseball player. Think of all the great things they have done in their career and how they have evolved over time. Now think how much fun would it be to watch your favorite baseball player drop dead in the middle of the field? Obviously not a very good thought, but this is quite possible if they are a user of different drugs (“Effects…”). Another good example is football. Everyone loves the key moments in a football game when players are hitting harder, playing more aggressive, and are desperate to win. If PEDs are used the players are always playing aggressive and are hitting even harder. This is a good argument, but cannot happen due to concussions and the safety of players. A new study has been done and is showing that players that took multiple blows to the head are developing a brain disease, that is ultimately leading to their death (Mayo Clinic Staff).
