Perfectionism And Depression

The aim of our study was to show that there a strong link between perfectionism and depression in young adults. Our key findings in our research was that the higher a participant scored on both questionnaire’s the more likely they were to display traits of perfectionism and depression in their day to day lives. Therefore our aim and hypothesis were fulfilled as our results show a strong correlation between perfectionism and depression traits.
We can also support our views with previous literature such as Asseraf and Vaillancourts (2015) longitudinal research on perfectionism and depression in children. Their findings support that depressive symptoms can lead to constantly be dissatisfied with any effort what is given whether it positive or

Their research confirmed that maladaptive perfectionism was indeed in association with depression. As maladaptive depression is known to be the most critical out of the two, it leads to more critical thinking especially about oneself which then in time leads to a state of depression. However these findings also reported that adaptive perfectionism was not in any way linked to depression. Similarly the participants used in Rice et als research were also young adults, of both genders and was conducted on a wide sample of the population.
A weakness of our study is that as we used a correlational survey we aren’t able to say that either variable of perfectionism or depression is the cause of the other we can only clarify that they interact with each other. Paradoxically strength of using a correlational survey is that the study can be replicated and not just to a population of young adults. This type of design can reach a geographically dispersed sample which could highly increase the number of participants which will in turn make the research results more

This is supported by the evidence that many perfectionist traits such as anxiety and fear of failure (which have been previously stated in the introduction) have been commonly linked to depressive symptoms as both revolve around low mood and feelings of low self-esteem.
In conclusion, our research compares positively with most other pieces of literature as they have both been able identify a positive correlation between the two variables. The method used allowed us to gather quantitive personal data on the participants thoughts and feelings using a reliable scale which allowed us to clearly analyse our results. In this study the hypothesis was to find out whether there was a correlation between perfectionism and depression scores. The results show that we have proved this hypothesis as we were able to prove that these two traits correlate each

The case of Jane, a depressed single mother, provides an opportunity to study the components of behavior theory in terms of causes and conditions, target behaviors, modeling, and appropriate therapeutic techniques. Jane has lost herself. She suffers from frustration and a fair amount of guilt, coupled with insecurity about her job and her financial situation. She has anxiety caused by her perception of having lost control of her children and her life, yet it can be seen that much of her suffering is self-inflicted by some target behaviors such as poor time management, sporadic attendance at work, and lack of participation in enjoyable activities. These behaviors yield undesirable consequences, which perpetuates a deadly cycle in which Jane’s depressive symptoms are amplified and contribute to further dysfunctional behavior.…

Dear four year old self, I solemnly swear to always be right. My purpose for managing my time was so I would do better this semester in school without becoming stressed. I wanted to get ahead in my work because I had a tendency to procrastinate on my school work. In the article “Dynamic Interplay of Depression, Perfectionism and Self-Regulation on Procrastination by Ozera, O’Callaghanb, Bokszczaninc, Edererd and Essaub stated that there is a relationship between not being self- regulated and procrastinating (2014). I feel like I can relate this because I normally make excuses when it comes to doing homework so I don’t have to do it and then put it off right before it’s due. They also said that perfectionism leads to depression but the person has such high standards that they put off the assignment (2014).…

Julia has two main cognitive errors that are central to her symptom presentation are her perfectionism and “should” statements. Julia’s perfectionism causes her to set extremely high expectations for herself and becoming critical of herself when she failed to meet those expectations. A clear example is Julia’s expectation to maintain a 3.6 GPA and a good running time in order to keep her scholarship, causing her to feel extremely stressed out the majority of the time (p. 275). When Julia failed to meet running times, which she attributed to her weight gain, she felt awful about herself and enacted another cognitive distortion of mind reading, believing that her coach was disappointed in her. As far as Julia was concerned, her perfectionism was being ruined by her weight gain and lack of…

My thinking as a perfectionist will result in being afraid to make any mistakes and would be conscious if anyone finds out about my mistake and that they would lose trust in me or might consider me as deceiving. This is very true of me and this is more problematic in my work place where it is difficult for me to say “no” for additional work or helping some out on the project and doing his work. This causes me to put long hours at work which in turn limits my time that I can spend with kids. Likewise, the same happens in the personal settings wherein I always says yes for any request from friends for help and that in turn might clash with work that I have to finish at home. D2A.
