Summary of:
“Perfectionism and Gifted Adolescents.”
Goal
My goal this semester is to improve my relationship with my teenage son. I believe that if I can understand some of his thinking processes, he and I will experience improved communication. He is a perfectionist and this characteristic manifests itself in our interactions. I am trying to understand perfectionism, in order to relate to him better.
Introduction
This study examined “the connection between perfectionism and gifted adolescents” (Schuler, 2000). Over the years, deciding whether perfectionism is a positive or negative trait has been debated. The purpose of the study was to “investigate the perceptions these students have of influences in their environment that might contribute

Since the purpose of the study was to explore the perceptions and beliefs of perfectionism and what influences this mind-set, the results were extensive and varied. Interestingly, the perceptions of normal perfectionists seemed to include positive traits. Their characteristics included “lower concern over mistakes, average personal standards, lower parental expectations, lower parental criticism, and average doubts about actions” (Schuler). They also had the highest order and organization scores. Those considered neurotic perfectionists had scores showing “the highest concern over mistakes, personal standards, perceived parental expectations, perceived parent criticism, and doubts about actions” (Schuler). Influences on perfectionism were found to be self, school, family and community. The study stated that “the consequences of being perfectionistic affected the participants in three overlapping areas: interpersonal relationships, school life, and the future” (Schuler). In the discussion of the consequences many of the students expressed ways in which their perfectionism was mostly positive and healthy for them, although most acknowledged some unhealthy aspects. Most in the study struggled with schoolwork done in groups, “especially for those who had a strong sense of fairness” (Schuler). Many felt that they were …show more content…
With this knowledge I hope to be able to help him “appreciate, understand and cope” (Schuler, 2000) with his perfectionism. I hope to use this information to show more compassion and understanding when he is frustrated and angry. I hope to communicate with him in such a way that I do not add any perceived expectations or criticism to what he may already have in his mind. He puts enough pressure upon himself so I want to avoid adding any more, real or perceived. I want for him the ideal the author stated, “When gifted adolescents become aware of the healthy aspects of their perfectionism, they may no longer be ashamed of their personality trait and may appreciate how positive perfectionism can be”

I remember my grade school teacher scolding me for being very perfectionist when I was a tyke. It was music class and I was grouped with a boy who clearly doesn’t have the “voice”. So before we could even have our first group, I already exclaimed that we won’t succeed because of this boy. I told my group members that he should just stick to the props and leave the singing to us.…

The boy once thought to be goodnatured and loyal, was actually driven by a mad jealousy and hated that about himself. “If I was head of the class on Graduation Day and made a speech and won the Ne Plus Ultra Scholastic Achievement Citation, then we would both have come out on top, we would be even, that was all. We would be even…. Was that it!” (John Knowles, A Separate Peace, page 52)…

The patient also expressed a dislike for subjects like math and science because he feels he is not good at them, so intervention is needed to help the child further his cognitive development and build confidences in these subjects. A home-based intervention would be to promote self-concept by communicating faults or concerns in a private manner, such as one-on-one with child. In the school setting the teacher can help build confidence by offering criticism in a constructive manner. By talking the child aside instead of scrutinizing their faults in front of peers can help ensure the child listens and absorbs the criticism in a positive way so that…

My thinking as a perfectionist will result in being afraid to make any mistakes and would be conscious if anyone finds out about my mistake and that they would lose trust in me or might consider me as deceiving. This is very true of me and this is more problematic in my work place where it is difficult for me to say “no” for additional work or helping some out on the project and doing his work. This causes me to put long hours at work which in turn limits my time that I can spend with kids. Likewise, the same happens in the personal settings wherein I always says yes for any request from friends for help and that in turn might clash with work that I have to finish at home. D2A. Perfectionistic concerns show strong and consistent negative relationships, that is, positive associations with negative characteristics, processes, and outcomes (e.g., neuroticism, maladaptive coping, negative affect) and indicators of psychological maladjustment and mental disorder (e.g., depression). In contrast, perfectionistic strivings often show positive relationships, that is, positive associations with positive characteristics, processes, and outcomes (e.g., conscientiousness, adaptive coping, positive affect) and indicators of subjective well-being and good psychological adjustment (e.g., satisfaction with life) Athletes who are extreme perfectionists have a pervasive ego orientation, and this should have debilitating effects if…

My perfectionism increased when I entered high school and I began to battle with it in this semester. Because I wasn’t the top honor student that I perceived to be, I started to become angry and disappointed in myself. Consequently, my first semester consisted of scrambling and trying to figure out how to adapt to a new difficult chapter in my life. In contrast, a positive influence that has occurred is the confirmation of the career that I want to pursue for the rest of my life. This confirmation became evident when I started field experience and started bonding with the Orangeburg Wilkinson High School…

My Action Plan During this semester, I have discovered useful information about myself, and as I move forward, I will be using the various learning tools and skills. However, before deciding how to improve my methods of learning plan, I took the time to review my transcripts/advising worksheet. By doing this, it has helped me determine exactly how many credits I have left, along with the type of classes. Including those, which are not part of my core curriculum. I need forty-nine credits overall, I have eighteen scheduled over the next two semesters, which includes the ones I am taking right now.…
