After leaving the casino, they all catch a taxi that'll take them to the Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles. Since they can't pay the taxi driver directly, Annabeth has the idea to use the debit card from the Lotus Casino that has unlimited money on it. On the way there, they talk about Percy's dream and if Hades is the one in his dreams. According to his dream, the being is waiting for two items— one must be Zeus's master bolt. Once they make it to the pier, Percy immediately goes to the water. There he is joined by a shark that Percy rides into the ocean. A woman comes before him explaining that she is Nereid, a spirit from the sea. She alerts Percy that few have made it back alive from the Land of the Dead. She hands him two pearls to use …show more content…
It takes them down a tunnel where they eventually see the abyss from Percy's dreams. Annabeth and Percy are worried that Grover will end up in that pit. Then, Grover hits a rock, and his broken shoes fall off. Annabeth notices they're heading for the entrance to Tartarus. They hastily get out of this path and continue to find Hades in his palace. Once in the palace, they meet Hades's wife, Persephone. The palace guards let them in, and Percy catches a look of Hades for the first time. Percy tells Hades to return the master bolt, but Hades informs him he doesn't want a war nor did he steal the bolt. Now Hades begins accusing Percy of taking his helm of darkness and threatening to release hell on earth if he doesn't give it to him. Percy denies that he stole his helm of darkness, but when Percy opens his bag, he sees the master bolt but doesn't know how it got there. When Hades demands the bolt and his helm, he shows Percy his mother frozen in a shower of gold. Percy remembers the magical pearls Nereid had given him. Although, he only has three meaning he cannot save everyone from Hades. Percy also remembers what the prophecy says, "You will fail to save what matters most in the end." Percy agrees with Hades to find his helm of darkness. He smashes the three pearls, taking them to the surface. They all realize it's the morning of the Summer Solstice; time is running very short.
