When Odysseus and his men are travelling back to their home they face the lotus eaters. In book nine, Zeus blows their ship to the lotus-eater island. There Odysseus’s men are given lotus fruit which makes them forget everything. They don’t want to go home, they don’t want to see their families, they don’t want to fight, the only thing they want to do is continue eating the fruit. Odysseus is the only one to not eat the opium flowers and he has to force his men back to the boats and lock them up to get them to stay with him. The movie depicts the lotus-eater island as a casino. In this story, all three of the main characters eat the lotus cookies and are entranced by the opium. They forget their quests and begin to gamble in the casino. Percy only snaps out of the effect when he hears his father’s voice in his head telling him what the cookies are doing. When they get there they get a ride with the “ferryman”. Along with ancient mythology, they give him the gold coins for passage across the river Styx. In the underworld, again the idea is presented that Hades was punished and sent to rule the underworld which doesn’t exactly align with Greek myth. The bitterness of Hades and Persephone is exaggerated for the sake of plot and entertainment. Persephone attacks Hades saying her only solace is returning to Olympus for six months out of the year and if Hades steals the lightning bolt he will destroy Olympus and her happiness. After she helps the them escape, Percy fights Luke, who is the actual lightning thief. He eventually gives Zeus back the lightning bolt and the war on Olympus is
