Percussion Concert Report

I observed the wind ensemble percussion section and was blown away by how organized they were in everything that they did. It was clear that they had the same type of training, because their strokes were so similar it was impressive. The percussion equipment was set up strategically, and every member of the ensemble knew exactly where to be at every moment during the music. The mallets were organized on stands, and it was interesting to notice the subtle change in tone when they switched mallets. Everything was intentional and I appreciated that. It was nice to see the techniques we learned in class used in a live performance. When the person playing the timpani was playing constant quarter notes, her stroke was almost identical for every note. It was hard to see the rolls happening on the snare drum, but I noticed that the technique is similar for bass drum. When rolling a decrescendo, he moved from the center of the drum out and the rolls became slower as he got closer to the rim. I also thought it was interesting that he used traditional grip when rolling on the bass drum. It made sense because of how the drum was turned, so it was definitely more practical than match grip. When watching the mallet player I noticed that she moved with the keys, and when she was playing the upper octaves she moved her feet so …show more content…
The members moved with a purpose and knew exactly where they needed to be and when. When two members were playing the same music on different mallet percussion instruments, they moved perfectly in sync, and they made eye contact every once in a while to make sure they were both still on the same page. There was also quite a bit of communication between the members of the percussion section and Dr. Silvey. There’s always some sort of confirmation between pieces to communicate they are ready for the next piece, and during the piece there is also eye contact with the conductor for certain

As the show progressed, more and more people danced to the front of the concert hall or even went on stage to dance with the band. The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra was not an exclusive group, but they invited others to enjoy the music with them, which allowed the performers to become closer and more connected with the audience. This reflects the ideology of music in African cultures because the separation between the performers and the audience is nonexistent. The orchestra certainly allowed the opportunity for a bridge to be built to the audience. Another similarity between the performance of the orchestra and African music performance was the performer’s dance.…

As the school year progresses, Thomas Jefferson's extra curricular programs continue to display their hard work for the students enjoyment. During the boys’ basketball game on January 4th, against Westminster High School, TJ’s drumline did just that, bringing the audience musical enjoyment in an unconventional way: by using buckets. After months of continuous practice, the drumline, led by band teacher Robin Johnson, was ready to perform a few songs as a halftime show. In preparation for events like this, “Students work on rudiments (rhythmic patterns), interpreting written music, as well as improvising and arranging their own music,” explained Johnson.…

During the final week of classes at Truman, I had the pleasure of hearing the school’s jazz bands in concert. During the concert, the Jazz Lab band and the Jazz Ensemble, both directed by Tim AuBuchon, played several jazz standards and modern favorites. The Jazz Lab band started out the night with five big band pieces. The instrumentation of the Jazz Lab band was standard for a big band; it included about four of each horn (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone), an upright bass, a piano, and a drumset.…

I notice when the piece changed gears and calm was after the flutes had a solo part of their own. That was kind of the turning point. Also I had to give notice to the triangle player, even though he had a small instrument, the way he contributed was quite surprising. There was a long period of time he had to keep beat and pace with the rest which looked easy but I noticed he had to get into it himself with head bobs to keep himself in rhythm. I really took notice to how each individual ether taped there toe or movement with their knee to keep rhythm with the…

Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…

I do not know how you have felt about this situation, but the state of affairs in terms of percussion has been tormenting my thoughts for the past several months. As Tyler and Patrick are graduating, and rumors of Harley, Ana, and Chase not participating in the program circulate, it is evident that we are going to have a shortage of percussionists in the marching band when we want to further expand the roster. Because of this, I do not feel comfortable in influencing your decision of my placement in the percussion section of the 2018-19 WHS Marching Cadets. I learned a lot from you and B.T.G. throughout my time both in high school and in Woodruff, so I feel I can optimally perform where you feel I am most needed. You know my strengths and weaknesses, so I feel that I can trust you to make the decision that would have the utmost benefits for the percussion section.…

Making It to the Big Time I am Vincent Crabtree. When I was a freshman in High School, I participated in an activity called “Winter Percussion”. It was much like marching band, but it took place during the winter and spring season, and it featured a smaller ensemble composed mostly of percussive instruments. Throughout the season, we had practice almost nightly, working to put together a show that would be performed in competition with other drumlines.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

andI also appreciated that they weren’t all just brass and woodwind instruments like you would find in a high school band. Some instruments that I took note of were the two harps, two bass’, six cellos, some viola’s, and many violins. There were also tubas, oboes, bassoons, and a grand piano. Before the performance started, a student who was performing stood up and walked to the conductor’s stage, and tuned all of the…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
