Perceptions of Beauty
Beauty and fashion industries in America focus on what they define as beauty. In result, most women feel the effects of America’s beauty industries perception of beauty by feeling that they are not pretty enough (Dawson 1). Definitions of beauty in the 20th century, when referring to human physical beauty, it is always based on outward beauty and sexual attractiveness (Wood 1). According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, Beauty is defined as “the quality of being physically attractive.” Standards of beauty today set the bar for women, men, children and groups of ethnic minority (Mainstream Standards 2). Two-thirds of women strongly agree that physical attractiveness is about how one looks whereas beauty includes much more of who a person is (What is Beauty 1).
America 's beauty industry affects the perceptions of beauty in the African American community by placing white beauty on a platform. According to Google, Mainstream is the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional; the most popular in opinion, fashion and beauty. The mainstream beauty ideal is almost exclusively white (How White Ideals 2). Therefore, for any Black woman to attempt to define her self-worth through the eyes of mainstream society is irrational. Black Women are rating their beauty on a scale that was never designed for them to come out as top contenders (Knight 1).
