This could also be analyzed through the Health Belief Model developed by social psychologists at the U.S. Public Health Service. The Health Belief Model suggested health behaviors would be affected by perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived costs, motivation and enabling or modifying factors. Appling the model to the example above, the woman would perceive that breast cancer is personally relevant to her because her mother and grandmother also suffer in that. Also, the woman would perceive the severity to be high because breast cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among female in Hong Kong (Centre for Health Protection, 2015). Besides, the woman would perceive that regular check-ups and screening tests would help discover the breast cancer in earlier stage while early-stage cancers are easier to treat and the chance of survival is higher.
