Perception Checking Examples

Decent Essays

Perception is just one of the ways in which humans can attempt to understand all that we claim to know. Put simply, perception is defined as our entire understanding of things, including our opinions. The way we perceive our surroundings is swayed by several factors, including past experiences, common sense realism, bias, and even the context in which an event is to occur. Malcom Gladwell’s chapter concerning the Bronx shooting from his book Blink illustrates the idea that many factors - along with a common paradigm between the officers - can influence ones perception of reality.…

“Judging things by the appearance or as a whole may be different than looking closely at things which may reveal errors, knowledge, or even surprises.” Most people, at first, judge other people or things by the appearance; thus, making unnecessary actions. After they look closely in detail, they see things different causing them to make different reactions both good and bad. This happens with every single thing and as you learn more you get different results which may surprise the examiner. Humans have this bad ability to make judgements and decisions and that habit will never be gone.…

In Peter Elbows Essay “The Believing Game” He discusses the vital information of the “Believing Game” and The Doubting Game to an instinct to which the audience understands to be important to our intellectual growth and differentiation of opinions/positions of ourselves and peers. In the beginning of Peter's essay, he discusses the way people deliberate in their minds over how people see things differently than others. He uses the example of inkblots to show that some people aren't willing to see things in a different perspective unless someone else is willing to see things in their perspective. Also the discussion of people wanting others to see their point of view, but wanting the others to give up their position and opinions about the topic or idea to…

Barbara Tuchman has a small saying about how advertising is all around us. Everywhere we look there is an ad that gives a false image of reality. Advertisements can have a negative effect especially for the younger population. Since ads are always on social media it is very easy for a person to get bombarded by them and persuades an individual to want to purchase the product. The company’s tactic is to capture one’s attention to make them feel like they must have their product.…

Perception checking as described by Interplay as “a three-part method for verifying the accuracy of interpretations.” It is accomplished by first describing an event which occurred to a person, giving a person two interpretations of what happened and asking if the individual is correct. One might question what is the purpose of such a technique, to which I reply that it is a protection from making false evaluation of people and creates division between them. An example would be if your spouse slams a door, if one were to not follow perception checking, they would assume such a person was angry when in reality they weren’t, aren’t, and feel hurt by such a statement. I chose perception checking because I believe it can help me not judge my sister incorrectly, but instead realize the complexity of everyday…

Perception As critical thinking individuals we are given the power of choice and free will; the ability to decide if we prefer the left path or the right dictating our journeys as we grow older in knowledge and mind. Choices that are customized to reflect directly on our values, morals and beliefs; like a descriptive manuscript written in stone which depicts who we are in the depths of our personal abyss, stating what makes us different than others around us. But what happens when our sense of moral is tested, when a conflict so great challenges our understanding of who we are; and we are made to pick one of two lesser evils. A switch goes off immediately which makes us question the decision to be made in terms of everything we stand for and…

Why Perception does not Equal Reality Have you ever seen an optical illusion that tricks your eyes into seeing something that isn’t there? That's called perception and perception isn’t the same as reality because appearances can deceive us and our point of view changes how we actually see something. In the play, “Sorry Wrong Number”, Mrs. Stevenson believes that she is ill and is bedridden, but she actually isn’t, it was all in her head. The first reason why perception isn’t the same as reality is that appearances can deceive us.…

Discuss the interplay between how individuals perceive themselves and how they are perceived by others. In his film Gattaca Andrew Niccol explored this dichotomy of people’s thoughts of us and our thoughts on ourselves. We would like to pretend we do not care how others perceive us; however, we have all secretly yearned to fit in somewhere, be it at work, school or at social gatherings. The way in which we see ourselves is heavily influenced by other people’s perceptions of us.…

In the video it explains this in detail by performing a series of tests such as “the Marshmallow Test,” and “the Monkey Business Illusion.” Both of these tests go on to prove how the mind’s ability to focus on specific items are linked to our everyday lives. This was explained by the example that while talking or walking somewhere, we tend to not think about things we are wearing including sunglasses or the shoes on our feet. The video continues by elaborating on ideas that we continuously judge appearances without even realizing it. The reason for this is in the person’s facial expressions which we then judge to decide how we feel about the person.…
