3. I define perception as the way we view things about the world and others. The five stages of perception are stimulation, organization, interpretation-evaluation, memory, and recall. Stimulation is how you perceive things with your senses. This includes sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. After this is organization. Organization is where your mind begins to categorize the events it just encountered through your senses. The interpretation-evaluation stage comes in when we start to internalize the organized events based on our prior experiences and perceptions of the world. We then proceed to file the thought upon events in our memory for later use. This leads into the final stage of recall. The recall stage is where we call upon …show more content…
The four selves are known as the open self, the blind self, the hidden self and the unknown self. The open self is what we know and what others know about us. An example of this is, I don’t like oranges and my friends know I don’t like oranges. This is the information you chose to share with others that you are aware exists. The blind self is things others know about you that you don’t. Your friends realize you are a stubborn loose cannon. You think you are perfectly calm and don’t understand what they are talking about. The hidden self is information you hide from others, that only you know. An example is that you are aware you have a peanut allergy, but you haven’t told your friends that. The unknown self is information that neither you or your friends know about you. I believe that the unknown self is something that exists. I believe this because of a little thing people call the subconscious. The subconscious contains thoughts of information that we don’t consciously know or are aware of. This is why I can see why there could be things neither we or others could …show more content…

The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy basically charts an individual ability to reach their expectations for another person high performance results (Sutton & Woodman, 1989). It is used mostly for supervisors that are expecting more from employees, usually employees that are up for promotions. This model is broken down into five categories supervisory expectancy, leadership, subordinate self-expectancy, motivation, and performance After looking over the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy it appears to me that subordinate self-expectancy could be the biggest perceptual errors that are affecting recruiters (Eden, 1984). They are setting the standards higher and this tends to increase the individual performance. But in the case where the individual does not increase…

In general, this is how we view our self-image and just how much of it overlaps our ideal self. Typically we feel better about ourselves when we find that our self-image overlaps our ideal self, but when they don’t overlap we feel the exact opposite. This is where defense mechanisms come into play and how we are able to protect ourselves from being dragged down when we fall short of our symbolic self. This type of behavior can also be seen when telling someone that they are bad at a certain subject or that they behave in a certain way.…
