Perceived Meeting Effectiveness

Improved Essays
Meetings happen all around us, both informal (e.g., friends meeting for coffee or kids playing at recess) or formal (e.g., business meetings or interviews). While department sales meetings are not nearly as fun as playgrounds or lattes with friends, they are an important role in business and are much more effective if handled properly. Meetings can create a collaborative atmosphere with all participants feeling as though part of a team, or they can be disastrous causing confusion, frustration, and procrastination. Whether it is a face-to-face meeting with one other person or a yearly conference with hundreds of people, planning and managing them well will help facilitate a desirable and positive outcome. Two primary reasons for holding meetings …show more content…
Meetings had been used to study other topics but had never really been studied in of themselves, and as such, the authors did so to not only to build a foundation for additional research but to also “yield practical implications for those responsible for calling, organizing, and leading meetings” (Leach et al. 2009). Five important characteristics were determined: using an agenda, keeping minutes, punctuality, appropriate meeting facilities, and having a …show more content…
The authors outlined the process, reaction, and findings of the program as a more efficient way of training and developing leadership skills with the goal of determining whether the method would gain acceptance among the participants and prove to be more effective and productive than previous instruction. For our own purposes, this study may be used as a guide for creating a similar training program in another industry. Leeson and Millar (2013) provide a detailed description of the elements of the program and their importance, the process of implementation, and the way in which results may be measured. Surveys were gathered from participants with two responses which merit special attention. The first concerned a nearly 40% increase in the creation of ideas as a result of active listening, and the second response revealed that participants were approximately 40% more proactive, happier, and organized (Leeson & Millar, 2013). The results of this study provide substantial evidence for the positive effective of enjoyable training programs used to create more effective

Co-facilitated session plan For the purpose of this assignment, I propose to approach the hypothetical planning of a co-facilitated session with another party in three stages; pre-session, during the session and post- session. Pre-session I would consider the pre-session planning of a co-facilitated session with another party to be an imperative part of the process. As we would both need to work collaboratively throughout the process to help the group achieve goals, the main objective would be for us to meet well in advance of the meeting in order to get to know each other and establish a trusting and respectful relationship, whereby we would welcome constructive feedback and have the ability to work through any differences which may arise.…

Upon reading the interview with Cliff Shaffran and the required lecture materials, I find that several Shaffran's points resonate with me. After having gone through several unproductive meetings that do not have goals clearly established, it is easy to feel time is being wasted. Besides this, if you add the fact that individuals at work are constantly on the stress area, you have a recipe for disaster. Based on my experience as a meeting participant, every time creativity and collaboration were encouraged is where I felt more productive. In consequence, I believe an effective facilitator should always strive to do this a reality.…

    Socratic Seminar

The Socratic Seminar that took place this past Monday, in regards to “Where I Lived, and what I Lived For” by Henry David Thoreau was in my opinion just one example of how much our class needs to improve when it comes to group discussions and analyzations. There is much room for improvement when communicating one’s ideas and opinions, not only in the class but also in myself and this seminar served as good practice. Of course, there were obstacles that were insurmountable when it came to running a smooth seminar such as class size and the number of people discussing at once but some common courtesies were ignored. The sheer number of side conversations that occurred at any one moment was quite troublesome for me personally, as I saw other people actively participating in the group discussion while others were treating them with great disrespect by not paying attention and periodically interrupting them before they could properly explain their input. Remaining on track also seemed to be a constant difficulty that we had to contend with.…

I once had a group assignment for a Business Law course I was taking at Tuskegee University. I don’t remember the exact context of the assignment but I do remember the troubles me and my group mates ran into while trying to schedule meetings to work on the assignment. Preparing for this assignment was a difficult task because of the many difference between myself and my group mates. I was in the band, another member worked, and the third group member was a member of the Student Government Association, making it almost impossible to set meeting times.…

Engaging with children is about finding ways to show that we are interested in their play and activity. It means going on a play or learning journey with them. This often means joining children rather than taking on a supervising learning alongside them. An example of this in my work place on the cruise ship as a kids host I get involved with the children when they make things in session and help them develop the ideas they have and give a few of mind and we then combined them both…

On November 9th, Erin and I co-facilitated a group discussion around trauma-informed practice as part of our Group Facilitation assignment as second-year nursing students. The process consisted of choosing a peer-reviewed article related to trauma-informed practice, then creating a Facilitation Plan around the article and relevant course theory, and finally facilitating a group discussion. As the next step towards the development of our group facilitation skills, we were assigned to write a critical reflection about the experience of facilitating a group discussion. Through this paper I provided a summary of our group facilitation experience, explored group dynamics, what I perceived as our strengths and challenges, what I have learned from…

By meeting with these groups individually, employees are more likely to voice concerns they may have with management. This will allow upper management to tailor workshops or training programs that will enable middle management to better engage employees and make them more aware of concerns. An example of these types of meetings as mentioned in Skidmore-Williams’ (2013) article “Communication Provides Foundation for Being a ‘Best Place to Work’”, The auditor general and his executive team regularly visited field offices for town hall meetings and separate group meetings with staff members and with supervisors. Companies like Recreational Equipment (REI) use a more modern way of meeting by using social media as a platform to meet with employees and let them voice their concerns in what they call their “company campfire” (Vorhauser-Smith,…
