Pentecost Comes to California
Los Angeles resident Neely Terry, who attended a small holiness church pastored by Julia Hutchins, made a trip to Houston, Texas, in 1905. She attended the church that William Seymour was pastoring. Although Seymour had not yet received the baptism of the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in other tongues, he was convinced that it was biblical and preached the message with great fervency. Impressed by Seymour’s character and message, Terry told her church about him upon her return to California and they invited him to visit. Seymour agreed to go, much to the shock of Charles Parham and others in Houston. Nonetheless, they laid hands on him and sent him forth for his evangelistic endeavor, which was originally scheduled to last for one month.

Others learned of the meetings and began to attend, including some white families of nearby holiness churches. Then, on April 9, 1906, a breakthrough occurred as Edward Lee was baptized with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues after Seymour had prayed with him. The two then made their way to the Asbery home. There they had a song, prayers and testimonies, followed by Seymour’s sermon using Acts 2:4 as a text. Following the sermon Lee raised his hands and began to speak in tongues. The Spirit of God moved upon those attending and six others began to speak in tongues that same evening. Jennie Moore, who would later marry William Seymour, was among them. She became the first woman in Los Angeles to receive the Spirit-baptism. She then began to sing in tongues and play the piano under the power of God, having never played the piano prior. A few days later, on April 12, William Seymour finally received his baptism at about four o’clock in the morning, after having prayed all night

Suppose that all 50 states turned against each other and broke out in war. Who would be victorious? Many would say that the winner would be Texas, considering their state motto “Don’t mess with Texas”. Others might say that the winner would be New York, because of the attitude that several of their citizens have. Despite these great candidates, the obvious winner would be California, because of its location, its size, and its giant naval base in San Diego.…

The authors that will be analyzed in this essay are Mary Rowlandson and Jonathon Edwards, and their pieces are The Sovereignty and Goodness of God and Personal Narrative respectively. I chose to analyze these texts because of my interest in the Puritan accounts of the colonies, and because of my own Christian faith. It is fascinating to me to read about the first colonists in America, their faith in God, and the documentation of their beliefs. Being a Baptist myself, I share many of the beliefs written in these texts. This opportunity to learn more about the origins of the Christian faith in America and the way the colonists applied it to their daily lives is a unique and fascinating experience.…

Jefferson was still constructing itself in a post-civil war era. With all people technically free, both blacks and whites coexisted under the infamous Jim Crow laws, separate but equal. Similarly to many other parts of America during this time period, blacks were separate but certainly not equal. My personal response to the Egalitarian views of Linda Belleville and Craig Keener is varied. When reading and learning from Belleville I would go from understanding and personally align in thought, to feeling her view was somewhat stretching for me especially when other references were used outside of scripture. I was able to follow Keener closer, but this could be based on my up bringing in the evangelical church. It was very helpful to learn from Belleville the difference between egalitarianism and feminism and that they are not the same view. That feminism minimalizes sexual distinction and egalitarians affirm sexual distinction and that they are equal yet complementary.…
