Pent Water: A Short Story

August 17 2015 Waking up and making sure everything is packed for four days of camping in Pentwater. I've never been away from home that long or tent camped. This trip was going to be long, hard but also fun. Loading up the school bus with bikes and bags was a struggle but we shoved everything we could in. The long bus ride was about to come. Someone grabbed out cards and instantly the whole team was playing. From go fish to egyptian ratscrew everyone was yelling in joy or frustration. Soon enough the bus pulled up to the campground filled with trailers, tents and campers. I climbed into the cramped bus and opened the windows bags and camp chairs started to fall out. The stuff that didn’t fall out was thrown out of the bus in a rush. I picked a spot to put up the tent with the rest of my tent mates. I definitely struggled to put up the tent but soon enough I figured it out.
The first run of camp was coming up. It was 85 degrees, definitely not ideal for running. My legs burned as I pushed through the five miles, but it felt good to be back at it. Halfway through the run was the pier looking out at lake Michigan. The cold waves sounded refreshing to the whole team, but this wasn’t the time. Instead, we turned around and started running the two

Dropping our bikes off at the rack and walking down to Cosmic Candy. Half the team bought candy, while the other half ordered smoothies. As the last of us checked out, we hopped on our bikes and headed toward the beach to walk out on the pier. We sat in a large circle and started to play truth or dare, only one dare was said and completed. The ride back to the campground was kind of difficult some of it was uphill and we had to ride really fast so we didn't get poured on. Thunder stated as we rolled into camp, rain started soon and it did not lead to very good weather for the rest of the

The grass was brown and dead, heat from the sun hitting the earth at angles that start fires. Wind was blowing, but it felt hot and humid, with a thickness that sent claustrophobic feelings into the lungs of every individual. The Willits Charter School was doomed to have mile testing on the day when the effects of the fire reached the south side of town. Everyone who lived within 5 miles of town was inflamed from the inside with exhaustion and smoke sickness. Personally, my body was plagued with the effects of smoke, smaug and asthma.…

Before I arrived at the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus on August 28, I vowed to myself that I would never run cross country for a school again because I never had the opportunity to practice on wooded trails, rather than concrete. But that changed one day, when I explored the campus and realized that there were wooded trails intertwining in every which way in the dark green forest lined with salmon berries and blackberry bushes that were surrounding the Upper Empire Lake. My dream has always been running in the forest, and afterwards swimming in a crystal clear, clean, deep, and refreshing lake after a long run. The Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus would provide superior running trails and a lake to swim in for my dream to come true. Only a few days later, after I explored the campus, I accidentally bumped into the cross country coach, Anthony Collins.…

    Laughter Speech

People laugh at the biggest variety of things. Ranging from puppies, to a funny interview seen on YouTube, to a montage of people hurting themselves for laughter, we can laugh due to almost anything. Lately in pop culture, there has been a lot of backlash towards the source of laughter. In movies, we see girls laughing when they make fun of another person, we see boys laughing when they pull a harmful prank on another guy, and people are generally laughing at other (s) misfortunes. Laughter as an entire concept has been blamed on this, but it seems more plausible that the source of laughter comes from the person laughing and what makes them the person they are, not from the theory of laughter itself.…
