“The National Assembly of Convenience Stores and Walgreens drug store chain estimate that handling pennies add 2 to 2.5 seconds to each transaction… We can calculate that presence of pennies waste 20 seconds per day,” (source B). Granted, this does not sound like too much but that is four hours per person per year, costing employees $60, and the nation $15,000,000,000. If pennies were to be abolished, the US would see an increase in profit and productivity, thus a bump in GDP. But, time is wasted in the government as well as in transactions. David Early reported that, “The original penny legislation was introduced in the Senate by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and in the House be Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL), two of three co-chairs of the ALBC. It passed in the Senate on November 18 and in the House on December 13,” (Source F). The problem is rather than debating key issues that would actually affect American citizens, the legislative branch decided that a face on currency would be more important, and that is a great disservice. Issues such as nation changing immigration, disease pandemics, economic problems, etc… took a back seat to a design on the most worthless coin. Resources and time were wasted about a face that reflects liberty and justice, yet none of that could have been found in the legislative branch. If the penny was abolished, less time in the future would be wasted on the design of one less coin. Even though the abolition of the penny does not stop consumption of time on other forms of currency, it does ensure that more time will not be added onto this specific coin, and the less time spent on trivial things within the legislative branch is what should be strived for. The penny simply wastes not only consumers time, but producers and government officials as well, therefore if the U.S. was to cease production, there would be an increase in productivity in all walks of
