The first penny in the United States was made in 1864 and now people are debating on the fact if they should keep the penny or eliminate it. The United States would be fine without the penny. Pennies cost more money to produce than they are worth. The U.S. Mint says that it costs 2.4 cents to make a penny when a penny is only worth one cent. In a word, you should eliminate the penny.
One reason we should eliminate the penny, according to Source #2, is because the time that retail business clerks count pennies the business is losing seven hundred million dollars by paying the clerks. Another reason is, according to Source #1, is that the United States government (taxpayers) lost 60.2 millions dollars on the production and distribution of pennies

Is the penny needed in the United States anymore? Some people believe the penny should be preserved because it is an important historical part of the United States. However, other people believe the menny should be eliminated because it is costs more to produce than what it is even worth. The penny should be eliminated in the U.S. currency because pennies are a waste of time, not worth a lot, too much to make, and nobody can buy something with just one penny. The penny should be eliminated because of several reasons including things will cost less and the government will not waste $100 million each year.…

((information from source numbers 1 and 2)) Even though the penny cost more than it’s worth to make (which is around 1.7 cents to make) the nickel does too! The nickel costs around 11.18 cents to make, and that’s not even the beginning. If we got rid of the penny we would probably use the rounding system. The bad thing is that some people think the rounding system will end up costing people extra money. Some stores might not choose to round their prices down.…

In the article Abolish the Penny by William Sapphire, a former speechwriter for Nixon tells us his opinion on the penny being abolished. He had a very strong passion towards it being abolished and quite frankly, I agree with him too. I agree with the abolish the penny article because there is nothing that we can buy with the penny, America has nostalgia when it comes to traditions, and As Sapphire puts it "you can't buy anything with a penny anymore. Penny candy? Not for sale at the five-and-dime (which is now a ''dollar store'').…

In 2001, Jim Kolbe (a member of the house of representatives) proposed a bill to congress to remove the penny from the American currency. Although this bill was rejected, there were many individuals who agreed with the it. Looking at the proposal from a logical point of view, it would make sense to remove the penny from the American currency as it becomes a nuisance to the common civilian and it costs more to make than it is worth. Wasting the time and pocket space of the common man, the American penny still holds strong as the smallest denomination of our currency system.…

Over recent years, the lowest level of currency, the penny, has been questioned for its worth to the American people. Even before we only paid with tap or Apple pay, the penny’s value has seemed to be rather questionable, at just one hundredth of a dollar. After all, if you came across a penny heads up on the sidewalk, chances are, you’d leave it for another person to pick up, perhaps a child who believes the penny to be of any worth. Although keeping the penny in the American economy would be of use to lower-income citizens, ultimately it is in America’s best interest to abolish the penny, due to its overall lack of use and value. For one, due to the penny’s low value, they often fall out of circulation anyway, sometimes literally in between one’s…

The penny has been around for many, many years. Kids collect them in jars, they float around in the couch, and on good days, someone finds a lucky penny on the ground. Its value, convenience, relevance, significance. The famous coin that once changed our economy and set it up for its future has now become irrelevant to our current nation and, as a result, should be abolished. Every day, millions of people travel in and out of stores, making purchases which become prolonged due to a common hassle we all face: fishing through pockets, in search of a nearly insignificant coin, the penny. This may just seem like a nuisance, but…

    Benefit Of The Penny

The other side says that the penny is too heavy and is a dead weight. Doing the math if you were to ship 100 million pennies on a cargo ship to Hawaii, the weight of 100 million pennies weight is in pounds 551,155 pounds and a full size cargo ship can hold up to 25,000 tons so it obviously is not a dead weight to a ship to carry coins for our country to use from one place to another. Another good point is that the penny does cost more to make costing 1.7 cents for the penny but like I said earlier in this easy the nickel also cost more to make than it's worth costing 8 cents far more than it is worth but since the penny only is worth one cent and the nickel is worth five nobody picks fun or says we should get rid of the nickel. Another part of the argument of the side that wants to get rid of it is that it's a waste of time to make and if we got rid of it we would save money and the machines and the people that run them would do half the work. The flaw with this argument is that obesity is a big problem in today's society.…

    Are Pennies Paid Too Much

    • 564 Words

Standing in line and waiting for the little old lady at the front to fish the $3.62 out of her purse and hand it to the cashier is completely a waste of time, especially since exact change is a nearly impossible feat in today’s economy. Rarely would one get a total of $10.00, more common are prices like $9.34 and other inconvenient numbers. Pennies are the smallest form of U.S. Currency and are worth $0.01, or one cent. The question arises, is the penny even worth using? We should eliminate the use of the penny because of the uselessness of the penny, the penny costs Americans more money than it’s worth, and most pennies just disappear into seemingly thin air after coming into the real world.…

Penny's? Do we really need them? all we do with penny's is either throw them away into fountains, ponds and even on the ground or we just store penny's in jars, boxes, bags. There is no reason to have the penny anymore all they do is cost people money to make them, and they take up a lot of space on our dressers, wallets, counters and etc. They also take up a lot of time if we didn't have to penny we would have more time to do other things instead of counting pennies for hours of the day.…

¨… [Penny] has been a part of the United States for two-hundred years. It's design has changed over twenty one times. History also shows that the economy has changed, so has the value of the coin (Sommer).¨ There has been controversial talk about if the penny is going to be discarded or be kept around in people's drawers. Some people may presume that keeping the penny will be beneficial to them, but that is an imprecise statement due to taking up too much space and making more pennies. To start off, pennies are starting to take up plenty of space.…

The need to eliminate the penny has finally come. Most people wouldn’t pick up a penny if they passed one on the sidewalk; simply viewing it as worthless and not worth the effort.…
