“Congratulations to our graduating K-9 class of 2016!” the police chief exclaimed with excitement. All the officers slapped their hands together in the midst of whoops and cheers. Penny had been waiting for this day ever since she was a puppy. It was always her dream to be a police dog. She was about to show her excitement with a loud bark, but caught herself knowing that it was improper for a new graduate. She looked up and saw her new partner, Ali. Ali was tough on the outside, but Penny knew she could get through her shell.
When the ceremony ended, Ali escorted Penny to her kennel and took off her leash. She gave her two bowls- one for food and one for water. Once the bowls were set down, Penny leaped forward and started feasting on her kibble. “Penny,” said

Her ears perked up quickly as she heard the vet talking to Chief Marshall in the other room, “It looks like Penny will be ok, but something happened with her hearing…” that was all Penny could focus on because she was picking up other conversations in her head. She could hear the woman at the front desk downstairs making phone calls and the man at the dry cleaners next door listening to his radio. Her hearing was now a million times better than it was before but it was hard to control. While she wanted to listen Chief Marshall’s conversation, she was stuck listening to another doctor’s treatment plan for a bird with a broken wing.
Penny just laid down and waited for what felt like hours for the Vet and Chief to come in and let her go. She thought about Ali and the other dogs. SHe also thought about the car that hit them and the driver. When Penny finally left she wanted to go visit Ali. “Please Chief MArshall I really need to know how she is. Ali is my partner and we are supposed to take care of each other,” Penny said persuasively. The chief agreed and they drove to the hospital. When they arrived in Ali’s room her eyes were
