Penn Summer Application Essay

The slight breeze eases the scorching end-of-July heat. I sadly pack my suitcase knowing that Penn Summer has drawn to a close. In an hour my parents will pick me up and I will depart this place that so deeply impacted my life. Alex and Aidan stop by my room to say goodbye. We laugh and exchange hugs. “Text me when you get home,” Alex calls as he heads down the hall. During Penn Summer, I developed deep relationships with like-minded students that further motivated me towards my short-term academic goal of a solid math and science education. I cannot believe how much I learned in twenty days. I arrived on campus wanting to delve deeper into the area of biomedical research. The Penn Summer Program filled my insatiable appetite for academic challenge. I finish packing, lock my room and turn in my key. When my parents arrive they are incredulous that I have fully checked out on my own and I am ready to head for home. I smile when I close the car door, reflecting on my increased independence fostered by the Penn Summer Program. I have taken an important step forward towards achieving my short-term personal goal. Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

Truant Mail The first I ever heard about the University of Alabama’s Neuroscience program was from a letter a woman I barely knew claimed was mine. This letter (Sent after a 2012 Big 10 Expo) had fallen into the wrong hands, thanks to the mailman and had travelled great distances from mailbox F to mailbox G. Serendipity I thought, after warily accepting my truant mail (lest it was another bill), as said letter offered a unique program tailored to fit my interests before my search for graduate programs in neuroscience ever began. From my youth (spent on the Caribbean isle of St. Lucia), I was captivated by the macabre, and this disquieting obsession progressed into a slightly less disturbing fascination with abnormal psychology. Many an afternoon…

I apply these teachings to my interest to conduct research. Conducting research can help me understand the foundation of an experimental process, as well as the methods executed in order to accept or deny a potential theory. Being a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry, a great amount of research is needed in order to gain clarity on the curriculum that is being taught. As a participant of the Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) program, I believe that this opportunity will open my eyes to different biological career choices and…

Going into my orientation at the University of Central Florida in 2012 I had heard about the students that transfer in from community colleges without ever knowing the importance of studying. I heard the statistics on the students who, as a result of not devoting enough time to studying, were academically disqualified and never finished earning their bachelor’s degree.…
